Special Commendation 1997: The group of buildings comprising the Grand Hotel Locarno remains almost entirely as it was when it was built in 1875, together with the major portion of its original parkland. Particularly worthy of note is the staircase and annex which feature among the best examples in any Swiss hotel. The later additions (lift, WC and baths in the guest rooms) have been assimilated into the existing design. The rooms have also been equipped with classic pieces of furniture, another factor that met with the judges' approval.
